Portland port volume declines in February

4/1/2008 10:26:07 AM

The Port of Portland posted a rare monthly decline in container traffic for February, the port’s first slide for that month since 2005.

Boxes moving through the Columbia River port fell 3.3 percent to 21,029 TEUs for the month.

The decline meant that Portland’s total box volume for January and February increased by a modest 3.3 percent to 43,122 TEUs, reversing a long string of double-digit increases.

The flat performance was also reflected in the port’s import and export numbers. Outbound containers through February increased 1.7 percent to 23,902 TEUs. Inbound boxes — once again bucking the general trend of import declines on the West Coast — increased 5.3 percent to 19,220 TEUs.
