Cathay Pacific has been allowed to raise passenger fuel surcharges by a massive 37 percent for June and July.
The Civil Aviation Department said the percentage increase is the highest since it began permitting airlines to collect fuel surcharges in 2004.
Cathay Pacific will charge HK$171 per passenger each way for short-haul flights, up from HK$125, and HK$710 each way for long-haul services, up from HK$518.
The government, which reviews fuel surcharge applications for airlines flying into Hong Kong every two months, said it has also approved higher surcharges by four other carriers, and is processing requests from eight other airlines.
Jet fuel prices have jumped 30 percent since the beginning of this year, according to Cathay Pacific. It said fuel prices now account for over 40 percent of its total costs, up from 30 percent last year.
Meanwhile, Lufthansa Cargo will raise its fuel surcharge by EUR0.05 a kilogram to EUR1.15 a kilogram as of June 9. The carrier increased its fuel surcharge on May 26 to EUR1.10 a kilogram.
