Ocean carriers in the Far Eastern Freight Conference will introduce an emergency port congestion surcharge of $250 per TEU at the French ports of Le Havre and Fos to cover costs associated with recent labor disputes.
The surcharge will apply to both eastbound and westbound cargoes with bills of lading dated on or after June 15.
French port workers have used a series of rolling strikes since mid-April to protest government plans to privatize seven of the nine state-run ports.
“Lines are no longer able to bear the entire cost of serving the French market, the FEFC said in a statement.
“The situation at French ports will be kept under review and the surcharge will be adjusted accordingly,” it added.
