Malaysia Airlines scraps cargo charges

4/15/2009 9:55:59 AM

Malaysian Airlines has scrapped terminal charges for cargo transhipped through its hub at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) for six months, Dow Jones reported.

The current rebates of between 50 percent and 75 percent will be increased to 100 percent, freight unit MASkargo's managing director, Shahari Sulaiman, was quoted as saying.

With the current economic crisis, the airline hopes the fee cut will be able to help the cargo industry cope and make the KLIA a more attractive hub for transhipment, he said.

"We hope to see a five percent improvement in transhipment cargo," which is considered good under the current scenario, said Shahari.

Last year, transhipped cargo of 353,000 tonnes accounted for about 60 percent of MASkargo's total overall volume.
