Total cargo traffic rose 13.6 percent from January to June.
The Port of Philadelphia handled 168,820 20-foot-equivalent units in the first half of 2013, jumping 24 percent from 135,656 TEUs handled during the first half of 2012.
In terms of containerized tonnage, the port moved 1.18 million metric tons from January to June, improving 18 percent from 1.00 million metric tons in the same period last year.
Overall, the port handled 2.52 million metric tons of total cargo in the first six months of 2013, rising 13.6 percent year-over-year from 2.22 million metric tons of cargo. If current cargo trends continue throughout the remainder of the year, 2013 will be the Port of Philadelphia’s fourth consecutive year of double-digit cargo gains, according to the port.
“With the deepening of the Delaware River’s main channel and our Southport Marine Terminal Project, the Port of Philadelphia is making the necessary improvements to our facilities and infrastructure to assure growth in the future,” said Charles G. Kopp, Philadelphia Regional Port Authority’s chairman, in a written statement.
