APL's new Suez Express service sails into New York City

8/22/2007 10:54:21 PM

APL’s new Suez Express service from South Asia arrived in New York City on August 17th. The new weekly service is the shipping line’s response to the global freight congestion crisis.

APL said the weekly service provides the industry's fastest transit times from Asia to the US East Coast through the Suez Canal.

APL senior vice president Bob Sappio added that the service also provides shippers with reliable Asian access to the US East Coast at a time when other transport alternatives are becoming increasingly congested.

"As container volumes grow and the transport system becomes overburdened, shippers are finding it harder and harder to eliminate variability from their supply chains," said Sappio, who manages APL’s Transpacific trade.

The Suez Express deploys eight vessels, each of which can carry between 4,000 and 4,500 TEU.

The Suez Express provides four US ports of call - New York, Charleston, Savannah and Norfolk - at a time when most East Coast services offer only three. It also connects nearly all of South Asia - including India, Vietnam, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Indonesia - to the US by providing feeder service to direct ports of call.

The Suez Express Service port rotation includes Singapore, Colombo, New York, Charleston, Savannah, Norfolk, Jebel Ali, Port Kelang, Singapore.

Transit times from Singapore are 21 days to New York, 24 days to Charleston and 25 days to Savannah.
