Sudan bans Russian aircraft

7/2/2008 10:32:01 AM

All Antonov and Ilyushin cargo and passenger aircraft have been banned in Sudan, following this week’s crash near Khartoum. According to the BBC, Sudan’s president – Omar al-Bashir – has also sacked the head of the country’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and ordered an investigation into recent crashes.

Monday’s crash in which the Russian crew of four were killed was Sudan’s fourth fatal plane accident in just two months.

The Sudan ban does not apply to military planes.

The country’s rebel groups often accuse the military of using Antonov aircraft to drop bombs on villagers in war zones.

Soviet-era aircraft are often used to transport goods and passengers in many African countries, as they are far cheaper than newer models.
