Vessels are waiting to load and unload cargo at the Port of Cochin in southern India, following a two-day strike at the facility that caused heavy congestion.
Port services were suspended for 48 hours due to a wildcat strike by the drivers and crew of container transportation trucks, a report by Commodity Online said.
The work stoppage was organised by worker unions servicing the India Gateway Terminal, which is jointly operated by stockholders DP World, Container Corporation of India, Chakiat group and Transworld Shipping.
According to media reports, the unions launched the industrial action to protest extensive delays due to congestion that were forcing them to wait for considerable periods at the port which lacks adequate worker facilities such as rest areas and canteens.
As a result of the disruption, the port is said to be running severely behind schedule, reports Commodity Online, with some ships being diverted to the neighbouring ports of Colombo and Tuticorin for offloading cargo.
