Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) has opened its second runway at Abu Dhabi International Airport, following the completion of the main construction in early September and airport certification, according to Reuters.
An Etihad A320 was the first plane to take off from the new runway carrying a group of media people. It touched down 10 minutes later.
The new 4,100m runway is located two km to the north of the existing runway. Work on the project began in May 2006 and includes the development of the airstrip, two major taxi-ways, two cross-field taxi-ways and two fire stations.
