More strikes hit Alitalia

11/14/2008 9:44:00 AM

Beleaguered Italian carrier Alitalia’s pilots have begun strike action to protest terms and conditions offered by the CAI takeover consortium.

CAI, which has the backing of four major Alitalia unions, has pressed ahead with its takeover plans despite the resistance and says it will call pilots individually to offer them jobs.

The pilots have called for 15 one-day strikes to protest the deal. At a meeting at Rome's Fiumicino airport, pilots and flight staff also agreed to a snap 24-hour strike.

About 20 flights were cancelled or delayed as a result.
