FedEx Corp's home airport in Memphis, Tenn, remained the world's busiest for cargo in 2008, weathering a decline in shipping during the recession and a challenge from Hong Kong, the National Post reported.
Almost 3.7 million tonnes of cargo moved through Memphis International Airport, a drop of 3.8 percent from 2007.
The volume was enough to stay ahead of Hong Kong's total of about 3.63 million tonnes, a 3.1 percent slide.
Faster-growing international shipments, particularly from China, had led to predictions that Hong Kong would unseat Memphis in 2008, said Robert Dahl, managing director of Air Cargo Management Group.
Memphis has held the title since 1992, when Airports Council International began keeping statistics.
