Volga-Dnepr Airlines has delivered the first consignment of tunnelling equipment to the Russian city of Sochi as it begins construction work of a new ground transport infrastructure in preparation for the 2014 Winter Olympics.
The 94-ton outsize cargo was transported from Novosibirsk to Sochi Airport onboard one of the airline's AN-124-100 freighters to OAO Russian Railways for the 2014 Olympics Project.
According to Alexander Golovin, general director of Sochi International Airport, the arrival of the Volga-Dnepr flight was also a significant event for airport, because it has stimulated a program of accepting freight that can only be delivered to Sochi air.
In June 2007, Volga-Dnepr Airlines carried a 63-tonne ice skating rink to Guatemala (where the IOC met to choose a host city) for use as part of Sochi's bid to win the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.
