Air NZ to test new fuel

6/7/2008 9:32:40 AM

Air New Zealand plans to test a new fuel in a B747 in September this year.

The fuel is made from poisonous seeds from the jatropha tree and Air NZ says it wants to use this fuel for 10 per cent of its needs by 2013.

Costs could be as low as US$43 a barrel and the initiative comes at a time when ethanol and other biofuels are under scrutiny, with some being blamed for the shortages in corn that have contributed to higher global food prices.
