Vietnam is estimated to need $5 billion to build and upgrade its seaport systems from now to 2010, aiming to handle 250 million tons of cargo in 2010 and 550 million tonnes in 2020, said the country's Department of Marine.
The country will focus on developing international deep water seaports like Lach Huyen, Lien Chieu, Van Phong and Cai Mep-Thi Vai so as to accommodate 100,000 DWT vessels, said Vuong Dinh Lam, the department head.
Information about investment sources that will be mobilized for the plan is not made available.
Earlier, Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung approved the country’s seaport development plans with the focus on building deepwater and container ports in the period.
Vietnam should establish a viable sea port system as soon as possible, said Tan Hua Joo, a senior official of Singapore-based Neptune Orient Lines, the world's eighth-biggest container shipping firm. He noted Vietnam has become an official WTO member and listed among the US’s top seven seafood importers and top three coffee providers.
