French Prime Minister Francois Fillon announced plans to privatise dock services in France's ports as part of legislation this spring aimed at expanding sea freight.
He said France has lost half of the market share in container traffic during the last 20 years, while the market has seen growth of over five pct annually.
The government plans to transfer dock activities from the state-owned port authorities to private operators.
The prime minister has set a target of increasing the freight handled by French ports to 10 million containers annually from 3.5 million currently by 2015, with 30,000 jobs to be created.
