Rotterdam to develop a new fruit hub

2/12/2008 10:42:00 AM

The Port of Rotterdam Authority plans to develop a new fruit handling centre on its southern bank due to the limited expansion opportunities at the current site.

Currently the port's fruit handling operations are concentrated at Fruitport on the northern bank, where one million tonnes are handled annually.

But capacity to cope with growth in the number of containers carrying fruit at the site is limited, because it is part of a future urban redevelopment project.

The port authority said a new site on the southern bank would allow for more short-sea, inland and rail transport and container handling.

It hopes to reach an agreement with stevedoring companies Kloosterboer and Seabrex regarding the exact location of the new centre within the next year.

So far no completion date for the development has been set.
