Hamburg Süd has been busy consolidating operations of its latest acquisition, Italy's Costa Container Lines (CCL), into its own service network.
In the East Coast South America/Mediterranean trade, the German operator will from the beginning of March bring together the weekly New Sirius service it operates in partnership with Zim, Niver Lines, CMA CGM and CSAV Group subsidiary Libra, with the Seagull service of CCL and Maruba.
The new Med-ECSA service will operate two slings:
• Sling 1, using six vessels of 3,100 TEUs to 3,500 TEUs (three each from Hamburg Süd and CCL) calling at Barcelona, Vado Ligure, Livorno, Fos, Valencia, Rio de Janeiro, Santos, Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Santos, Rio de Janeiro, Pecem and back to Barcelona.
• Sling 2, operating with six 2,800-TEU vessels, including two from Hamburg Süd and CCL, calling Valencia, Genoa, Livorno, Malta, Dakar, Buenos Aires, Rio Grande, Sao Francisco do Sul, Santos and Valencia.
"Other eastern Mediterranean and South America East Coast ports will be covered either by feeder services or by the existing liner service network of the shipping group, thereby guaranteeing fast transit times and comprehensive port coverage," Hamburg Süd said in a statement.
Also from the start of next month, Hamburg Süd said it will combine and upgrade the services it offers with subsidiaries CCL and Alianca in the trade between the East and North coasts of South America, Central America, U.S. Gulf and Caribbean.
The new combined operation will result in three services deploying a total of 14 vessels:
