With 1,111 flight movements on the day of the EURO 08 semi-final match in the Austrian capital, Vienna International Airport registered the highest daily traffic volume in its history - the day of the final brought an additional 1,070 flight movements.
“Extensive preparations and good organisation made it possible for us to successfully meet the challenges of the EURO 08“, summarised Herbert Kaufmann, member and speaker of the Management Board of Flughafen Wien AG. “All handling processes functioned smoothly, and the separate fan terminal proved to be an excellent idea“, underscored Kaufmann.
Roughly 190 special charters landed at Vienna International Airport, bringing 28,000 fans to experience the matches in the stadium or one of the many fan zones. Additionally, numerous official guests and celebrities arrived at the VIP terminal with private jets. The EURO 08 brought an extra 650 business jets with ca. 4,100 passengers to Vienna.
An equipment storage building at Vienna International Airport, the GENO northeast facility - was converted into a fan terminal especially for the EURO 08. Arriving fans were transported from here directly to the stadiums and fan zones. This separation minimised disruptions in the core area of the airport on playing days.
“Short ways“ was the motto, since passengers only had to travel 250 metres from their aircraft to passport control. The GENO was used for arrivals, while departing flights were handled through the “normal“ terminal.
