Stocks of major US airlines fell sharply on Monday as oil prices soared to their biggest one-day gain on record, Reuters reported.
Shares of American Airlines parent AMR Corp fell 13 percent to $11.21, while Continental Airlines stock slipped about 9 percent to $16.81.
United Airlines parent UAL Corporation's stock dropped about 11 percent to $11.80, and Delta Air Lines slumped 10 percent to $8.70. US Airways Group and Northwest Airlines were also down.
The prospect of a federal government rescue to address the crisis in the financial services sector improved the outlook for energy demand in the United States.
