Airlines around the world are being forced to defer or cancel more aircraft orders with Qantas confirming it was forced to delay orders along with carriers in the United States.
In a bid to reduce capital expenditure, Qantas has outlined drastic cuts, including deferring orders for four Airbus A380s and 12 Boeing 737-800s and plans to approach Boeing about delaying delivery for the B787 Dreamliner.
According to Qantas boss Alan Joyce, the carrier’s international services and freight arm – Qantas Freight – are suffering most from the global economic downturn.
And in the United States, airlines – which have already downsized – are likely to defer or cancel more aircraft orders if the economic problems continue to erode travel demand and hit credit markets.
Industry sources say there’s a possibility of more deferred aircraft orders and cancellations in the near future.
