The head of Sharjah-based Air Arabia has called for new airports to be built in the region to cater for the growing number of low-cost carriers (LCCs).
Adel Ali also singled out Sharjah Airport's development as vital to the success of Air Arabia, Mena's first low-cost carrier.
"The Middle East as a whole, and especially the Gulf, is witnessing enormous economic growth, which has had a direct knock-on effect on regional air travel," Ali said.
"The low-cost sector growth is dramatic, with more than 10 new LCCs introduced in the region in the past five years alone," Ali said.
Following Air Arabia's success, the low-cost market was joined Kuwait-based Jazeera Airways and Saudi-based Sama. Dubai has also announced a plan to launch an independent no-frills airline, which will initially be under the Emirates banner.
