If its application is approved by Vietnam’s Ministry of Transport, Mekong Aviation is set to be the country’s third private airline after Vietjet Airlines and Speed Up.
None is expected to fly this year, with Mekong Aviation planning to become operational in 2010 using Noi Bai Airport as its base and with a fleet of 10 aircraft flying domestic routes including Hanoi–Phu Quoc, Hanoi–Nha Trang, and Hanoi–Can Tho.
The second private airline in Vietnam, Speed Up, is expected to make its first flight in 2009 and provide domestic flights from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang.
The first private airline, Vietjet Air, was licensed in December 2007 and planned services from the end of this year. However, the airline has announced a four-month delay to the flight plan due to financial problems caused by the increase in fuel prices.
